SAT Math Prep: 10 Strategies for a High Score
The SAT Math section doesn't have to be intimidating. Here are 10 proven strategies to help your students score higher, plus free and premium prep resources.
The SAT Math section tests concepts from algebra, geometry, data analysis, and some advanced math. While the content isn't extraordinarily difficult, the time pressure, trick question formats, and calculator/no-calculator sections can trip up even strong math students. As a teacher, you can help your students succeed by teaching both the math content AND the test-taking strategies. Here are 10 proven strategies for a high SAT Math score, plus resources for SAT math prep.
1. Know the SAT Math format
The SAT Math section has two parts: a No-Calculator section (25 minutes, 20 questions) and a Calculator section (55 minutes, 38 questions). Both sections include multiple-choice and grid-in (student-produced response) questions. The content is divided into four areas: Heart of Algebra (33%), Problem Solving and Data Analysis (29%), Passport to Advanced Math (28%), and Additional Topics in Math (10%).
2. Master Heart of Algebra first
Heart of Algebra (linear equations, systems of equations, inequalities) makes up a third of the math section. If your students master this area, they're guaranteed a solid score. Focus on: solving linear equations, graphing linear functions, systems of equations (substitution and elimination), and linear inequalities.
3. Memorize the reference formulas (and which ones aren't provided)
The SAT provides a reference sheet with some formulas (area of a circle, Pythagorean theorem, etc.). But it does NOT provide: slope formula, distance formula, quadratic formula, midpoint formula, or any trigonometric identities. Students should memorize these cold.
4. Practice with the grid-in format
Grid-in questions (where students write the answer instead of choosing from options) trip up many test-takers. Common mistakes: writing fractions incorrectly (use 3/5 not 0.6 if the answer is a fraction), forgetting to reduce fractions, and decimal point errors. Have students practice grid-ins specifically.
5. Use process of elimination aggressively
Even if students can't solve a problem, they can often eliminate 1-2 obviously wrong answers. With 4 choices, eliminating 1 improves the guessing odds from 25% to 33%. Eliminating 2 improves it to 50%. There's no penalty for wrong answers on the SAT, so students should never leave a question blank.
6. Manage time wisely
With 20 questions in 25 minutes (no-calculator) and 38 in 55 minutes (calculator), students have about 75-87 seconds per question. Teach students to: skip and return to hard questions, mark their guess on the answer sheet (so they don't misalign if they run out of time), and check their work only if they finish early.
7. Watch for trick questions
SAT Math loves to include trap answers. Common tricks: asking for x when the equation solves for xยฒ (so the answer is the square root, not x), including extraneous solutions (that don't satisfy the original equation), and using 'except' or 'not' in the question stem.
8. Plug in numbers for variable questions
When a question has variables in the answer choices, plug in real numbers. Pick easy numbers (2, 3, 5) โ not 0 or 1. Solve the problem with your numbers, then see which answer choice matches. This converts abstract algebra into concrete arithmetic.
9. Use the calculator strategically
On the calculator section, don't use the calculator for everything. It's slower than mental math for simple calculations. Use it for: complex arithmetic, graphing functions to find intersections, statistical calculations, and checking your work.
10. Take full practice tests
The single best way to improve SAT Math scores is taking full, timed practice tests. This builds stamina, familiarizes students with the format, and identifies weak areas. Use official College Board practice tests (8 are available for free online) โ they're the most accurate representation of the real exam.
